Australia’s Farming Woes

We’ve all seen the adverts on TV promoting “Aussie Farmers” and buying home grown food, but what we don’t know is that farmers are struggling to keep their head above water. There are currently 134,000 farm businesses across Australia with 307,000 people directly employed, however in the past twelve years Australia’s agricultural land area has been reduced by 11% (that’s around 53 million hectares).
Even though we live in a developed country some farmers are living in the same economic conditions as those in underdeveloped countries. We need to buy local produce to make sure that Aussie farmers can stay in business and continue to grow and sustain Australian food. 93% of Australia’s daily consumption of food comes from Aussie farmers and that number will start to decrease if we keep buying international produce.
