Taste of the FutureLast week, students from across the state competed in a Master Chef style cook off for a chance to win a Chef Apprenticeship Scholarship worth over $5,500. With a high level of culinary skills on display, the top prize was awarded to 18 year old Yasmine Yianni, a year 12 student from Servite College. The Hospitality Group Training (HGT) Taste of the Future Competition invited schools to enter their top student to showcase the skills and passion for cooking of secondary students.
Judges Don Hancey (WA Food Ambassador), Stephen Clarke (Clarke’s of North Beach) and Paul Beard (Perth Arena) were impressed by the skill level of the competitors, with Don commenting that the “skill level of the aspiring chefs gets better and better each year.”
Yasmine has travelled and met some of the world’s most renowned chefs including David Thompson. Her winning Cypriot Chicken Ravioli reflected her Greek/ Cypriot heritage. She will now be sponsored for the next three years as she begins her culinary journey. Swan Christian College’s Alexa Coleman took out second place, while third went to Carina van der Berg of Peter Moyes Anglican Community School.
The competition, now in its fourth year, helps to support the next generation of aspiring chefs in response to the labour and skills shortages in the hospitality and tourism industry.
