IMG_0175 copySeven students from high schools across WA competed against each other recently in a Master Chef style cook off. The Hospitality Group Training (HGT) Taste of the Future Competition is aimed at young people across the state with a passion for cooking. Each school is invited to enter their top student and compete for the chance to win a Chef Apprenticeship Scholarship valued at over $5,500.
The 2018 winner, year 12 student Maddison Buckley (aged 17) from Forrestfield took out the top prize with her Harissa Bronze Whaler Shark served with Lemon Mayonnaise and Herb Oil. Maddison’s cooking influences have come from her Indian Grandfather and her uncle Aaron Carr who is a renowned WA chef.
After Maddison graduates from Swan Christian College she will later this year, the support of HGT, commence her apprenticeship to begin her culinary journey. West Australian based supplier Oil2U will sponsor Maddison for the next three years covering the cost of her Training College Fees. Oil2U Operations Manager Luke Peet said “Oil2U is keen to give back to industry and support the next generation of aspiring young chefs. By covering the costs of the Scholarship we can make an apprentice more attractive to potential employers. Mentoring young chefs through their training is essential to kick starting their careers.”
The competition was created in 2013 to assist in promoting chef apprenticeships to secondary school students to respond to labour and skills shortages in the hospitality and tourism industry.
