Red Wine Tasting – July 2014

I usually drink white wine, so when I was asked to review some reds I called on the help of a few friends who enjoy red wine. We had three glasses each – one for each of the three wines – so we could taste each one and compare them. The first one we tasted was the 2010 Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve, followed by the 2011 Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot L.T.Cf, and finally the 2011 Fire Gully Shiraz. At first, not being a red wine drinker, I found it difficult to distinguish between them. But as I sipped from each glass in turn, I started to be able to differentiate between the slightly sweeter, more full-bodied Shiraz and the other two, and then between the two Pierro’s. In the end we were all in agreement that we liked the 2010 Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve the best, followed by the 2011 Fire Gully Shiraz, and we all felt the 2011 Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot L.T.Cf would benefit from a little more maturity. The 2010 Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve had the advantage of an extra year in the bottle, and was smoother and more mellow than its younger brother.

2013 Fire Gully Chardonnay
2012 Pierro Chardonnay
The 2013 Fire Gully Chardonnay is a light dry wine that is very pleasant to drink. I have been enjoying a glass with dinner for the past few days. There is just a hint of mellow oak to soften the more youthful flavours, without having too much oak for my taste, as some chardonnays do. The 2012 Pierro Chardonnay has more of the oak flavour, making it less palatable for me, though if you like the oak flavour, you may prefer this one.
