openingnightcastlerock-photoelementsmargaretriver-7The world famous Margaret River Gourmet Escape held from  19th to 20th November 2016, brought us a fantastic line up of amazing food, fine wines, great beer and celebrity chefs. This was the ultimate culinary adventure, with over 50 events showcasing the best of the region from Busselton to Augusta, a line up of food and wine personalities and unique events that did not disappoint. The festival spread across the Margaret River region from the beach to the wine estates, with the main event at Leeuwin Estate, revelling in beautiful beaches, lazy long table lunches and fine wines.
The village featured over 150 artisan producers, interactive food and wine activities and plenty of chances to meet our favourite chefs. The Gourmet Village also featured 16 pop‐up restaurants by some of the Margaret River region and WA’s best dining establishments and producers including Leeuwin Estate Winery, Xanadu Wines, Hayshed Hill, Swings Taphouse, Studio Gallery & Bistro, El Rio, Lot 80, Linley Valley Pork, Mt Barker Free Range Chicken, Voyager Estate, Print Hall, Bib & Tucker, Genuinely Southern Forests, and Pete Manifis with Buy West Eat Best. Buses were booked in advance through South West Coach Lines, so we could leave our cars at home and make the most of the wineries, breweries and artisan producers. Ingrid Rickersey, one of our journalists at Menu Magazine, said she had a great time with the top chefs and wines at the Escape.
In one of her posts on Facebook, Rickersey said, “Awesome weekend … and special thanks to Sandra Devahasdin for looking after us all so well.”

This year’s top item to look out for was The Honeycake – all handmade from scratch in their Fremantle bakery. Inspired by a century’s old Bohemian recipe, this delicious cake is a unique combination of alternating light, honey-flavored layers with smooth, creamy caramel topped with fresh walnuts and honey crumbs.
