This year’s Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Competition regional cook-offs saw an advanced array of young chef’s showcasing their culinary talent.
But it was one young WA cookery student who ended up taking the cake – literally.
20-year old Cameron Wetton captured the attention of expert world judges with a quirky dessert that earned him overall victory in the longest running chef’s competition in Australia.
With a mystery box of ingredients and in just three hours, Cameron teamed up with fellow West Coast Academy of Hospitality & Tourism student Shane Middleton to create a chocolate collar with banana mousse and burnt meringue, pecan banana friand with caramelised banana and a banana Kit Kat ice cream.
Academy students Curtis Taylor, Sian Cole, Royston Clark and Sam Carstairs also displayed an impressive performance, finishing only 0.25 of a point behind Cameron and Shane who will represent WA in the National Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award in Melbourne in September.
