Cheeky Dining

is a modern venue with a rustic feel featuring brickwork and an awesome welcoming fireplace. This spacious venue, also catering for weddings and special functions, provides an idyllic setting with raised decking outside to maximise the panoramic views overlooking water and vineyards.
Brewing a selection of fine craft beers and ciders, Cheeky Monkey adjoins Killerby’s Winery on the property. Not only is there a serious selection of drinks to choose from, but it’s also a relaxed family venue with plenty of room for walks including a playground for the kids.
Head Chef Jason Turner, comes with good credentials having trained with restaurateur Danny Drummond and worked at the Oyster Bar in Perth. Jason is passionate about good quality fresh produce and has plans to develop a herb and vegetable garden on the property to enhance the fresh dining experience even further. He has a farming background, and likes to source most things locally including beef from Leeuwin grass-fed beef in Karridale and milk, dairy and ice cream from Millers Dairy Farm in Cowaramup.
An eclectic menu including tapas, burgers, mains, pizzas and sweets changes four times a year to match the seasons. Tasty Tapas – Prawn Cannon Balls with sour cream and chilli and Peri Peri Mexican-style prawn taco is a good starter or a tasty bite to have with a drink.
We were delighted to see the Soft Shell Crab Burger on the menu, as it is something people at Menu Magazine have talked about for ages and now finally someone has done it. A funky looking creation, it’s called Boccodillo which is Spanish for ‘poor man’s roll’. It comes complete with soft shell crab, coleslaw, rice wine vinegar dressing and aioli in a sourdough roll. A pils or IPA (Indian Pale Ale) goes well with this one.
For something a little more substantial you can try a Beef Burger – Leeuwin grass-fed beef served medium on a fresh sourdough roll topped with bacon, cheddar, tomato, lettuce, pickles and Cheeky’s sauce, served with fries and aioli.
As a main course the Sirloin steak is hard to beat. This 21-day air-dried, local grain fed beef
is served chargrilled to your liking with chips, garden salad, Killerby red wine jus and garlic herb butter. And for a couple of dollars extra you can have it topped with Exmouth king prawns in garlic and riesling butter. Killerbys 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon with its earthy rich flavour was great with this deliciously tender steak.
Jason says this is typically the sort of dish he loves to prepare – a good quality steak that he can be creative with, enhancing the flavours with the cooking process.
Kids are well catered for with a Little Chimps menu, including fish & chips, mini beef burger, Hawaiian pizza and a cheeky kids
plate, ranging in price from $8-$12 including a Harvey Fresh 100% juice drink. There are a variety of kid’s drinks available including the Spider Monkey (vanilla ice cream with a choice of soft drink). Yum – remember that one! The well-equipped playground will keep the kids happy for hours too.
Open from 10am daily, the main menu is available from 11.30 until 3pm, while pizzas are available from 10am until 6pm. Cheeky Monkey, with its relaxed feel, will appeal to a diverse age range from kids to grandparents, and is a place where you could quite easily spend half a day or even a full day.
