Relax on The Terrace

The Terrace Lounge offers diners a casual relaxed atmosphere amid the bustle of the city, where you can take time out, have a snack and a drink or something more substantial. As part of the Somerset Hotel, guests staying at the hotel also have the option of dining in without having to venture any further.
Open since September this modern lounge/bar and restaurant adds a good vibe to the Terrace, right in the heart of the city and only a short walk away from banks, shopping malls, Perth Convention Centre and the Bus Port.
My colleague and I recently called in to check out their lunchtime service and were pleasantly surprised.  If you want a light meal or a nibble with a drink you can’t go past the tasting plate for two with a selection of cold meats, seafood and dips to share.
Another tasty starter is an entrée of prawns in a garlic cream sauce and served with rice – perfect to soak up the sauce. Being a generous serve, we thought the dish was good value. This impression was confirmed when speaking with General Manager, Bob Perovic, who said the venue, suiting a variety of people, is an ideal central location and good value for money.
“We’d like to think that people can call in for a drink after work, have a light snack or a meal and not have to rush straight home to change. It’s value for money so stay in town a bit longer” he said.
With a private function room that can accommodate around 100 people (300 people for the entire venue), the Terrace Lounge is ideal for gatherings ranging from large corporate events to after work drinks and nibbles with colleagues and friends.
You can even book the entire venue for a day for that special celebration such as a wedding or corporate function. And don’t be afraid to ask for particular catering. If you ask Chef Chris Skinner what you can have, he will say “Tell me what you want, we can do anything.”  He is also happy to work to suit people’s budgets.
Chef Chris is no stranger to catering for functions, having worked for a large catering company in New Zealand as well as in Perth restaurants. One of Chris’s creations is a Crispy Skinned Barramundi, which was well cooked served with a chive and prawn mashed potato, something I had never tasted before. I liked the mash as it was flavoursome with the added texture of the prawns, also complementing the fish. This was nicely matched with a crisp cold glass of 2010 Bancrott Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region in New Zealand.
The chef’s recommended dish was the fillet steak with onion relish and char grilled potato and grilled tomatoes, all brought together with a nice mushroom cream jus. A good choice of wine to compliment this meal was the Stella Bella 2007 Cabernet Merlot from our very own Margaret River region. This meal again was a good size, tasty and value for money.
So take time out and visit the Terrace Lounge on St George’s Terrace, with it’s alfresco balcony and relaxed ambience right in the CBD and only a short walk to most attractions. Or just sit on the Terrace balcony, have a drink before dinner and watch the world go by.
