FANGABILITY MAKES THE MERRYWELL’S STEAK SANDWICH PERTH’S BEST

imageThe Australian Hotels Association (WA) has announced The Merrywell at Crown Perth as the winner of the AHA’s Best Metropolitan Steak Sandwich for 2015.
Merrywell Head Chef, Ryan Ebbs, attributed his success to a blending of Australian and Mexican flavours by using home-made guacamole, pickled cabbage, Western Australian bred wagyu and fresh bread from a local bakery.
As usual the judges were looking for a steak sandwich that displayed superior ‘fangability’, a term used to describe the ease at which one’s teeth can sink into a juicy, succulent and flavoursome steak sandwich.
The scores were extremely close in this year’s regional and metropolitan competitions, a reflection of the high standards being set in Western Australian pubs.
This year’s metropolitan judging panel included special international guest, Sarah Quinlan; Channel Seven and Today Tonight Senior Reporter, Graeme Butler; Lion’s Regional Manager, Gavin Burt; and AHA(WA) CEO, Bradley Woods.
Mr Woods congratulated The Merrywell saying “the public response to the competition has again been overwhelming; Western Australians are certainly passionate about their steak sandwiches and enjoy being involved in a democratic voting process.
“The steak sandwich brings together everything that is great about WA venues and pubs, from the home-style cooking to locally-grown WA produce.”
The five metropolitan finalists faced each other at a ‘cook off’ to determine which steak sandwich was the best at the AHA Hospitality Expo on Wednesday 20 May 2015 at Crown Perth. WA’s Best Steak Sandwich regional and metropolitan competitions are sponsored by Tourism Western Australia and beverage company Lion through the James Squire brand.
