Where Everyone is part of the family

With a bird’s eye view of Matagarup Bridge, its popular zip line and a stunning Swan River backdrop, Mizzica Mangiatoria is a hidden foodie gem tucked inside one of Perth’s premier tourist destinations.

‘Mizzica’ in Sicilian means surprise, wonder and delight; the word they use when something truly amazing happens. That is exactly what Mizzica Mangiatoria wants you to feel when you walk through their doors; a moment of joy, warmth and a taste of Sicily right here in Perth.

Seating at the Italian bistro can be an outdoor affair and retractable blinds have been fitted to the large alfresco area’s framework. Perky music gives the space a vibrant feel and on our visit, it was proving a popular spot for families enjoying a spot of lunch after a game of mini golf next door.

According to co-owner Raffaella, many of the diners are tourists, which makes sense given that Crown Perth is just a stone’s throw away.

The first taste of the day was a beautifully presented Crema Caffè, artfully served in a cocktail glass which, according to Raffaella, is meant to be enjoyed at breakfast. Smooth, thick and sweet, it was topped with a swirl of cream and the coffee gave it a hefty kick.

Next up was the delicious Italian Omelette. Thick, tasty, colourful and generously portioned, ours came filled with cheese, tomatoes and spinach, topped with salad greens and a circle of beetroot purée edging the plate.

We tried a favourite from the dinner menu – the oven-baked Prosciutto and Stracciatella Pizza, which had a crispy crust, thanks to a dredging of semolina. The base was topped with tomato purée, creamy stracciatella and lashings of prosciutto. It was not oily, as is often the case with other pizzas, and the thin base made for easy eating. Our pizza was served with a refreshing Birra Moretti, which is a mild Italian lager that paired perfectly with the doughy goodness.

The special of the day, Pappardelle Bolognese, was an absolute stand-out. Silky ribbons of pasta, made in-house, were generously coated with a rustic, bold Bolognese sauce that had just the right amount of sweetness. Not too oily and not too dry, and with minimal bite, it was an absolute winner. The pasta was paired with a 2022 Brookland Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that had a slightly dry finish. Hailing from Margaret River, it matched the dish in its boldness.

Mizzica Mangiatoria boasts no less than four types of tiramisu desserts. Contrary to popular belief and common in Italy, tiramisu has more flavours than just coffee. The tiramisu menu changes by the day, but we could choose from lemon, Biscoff and pistachio. We opted for the lemon and pistachio tiramisu, with the pistachio being a massive serve of sweet, creamy goodness. The lemon won out as it was doused in Limoncello, with just a hint of zest and a shot of limoncello on the side.

Mizzica Mangiatoria is a fully licenced venue available for functions. It is open for breakfast and lunch, seven-days a week (including public holidays) and open for dinner from Friday to Sunday.

Whether you are catching up with friends before a game at Optus Stadium, unwinding after a night at Crown Casino, or simply craving a taste of Italy, Mizzica Mangiatoria welcomes you like famiglia.
