Head Chef Michael Hill attributed the win to the use of local produce from the South West. Tall Timbers was a clear standout, with the score clearly reflecting the win.
As usual the judges were looking for a steak sandwich that displayed superior ‘fangability’ – a term used to describe the ease of which one’s teeth can sink into a juicy, succulent and flavoursome steak sandwich. One of the finalists this year even included buffalo as the meat of choice.
This year’s judging panel included Rob Gough, Owner of Settlers Tavern and AHA(WA) Divisional President, Steven Blaine, Lion’s Craft Beer Ambassador, Brett Thompson, Chief Financial Officer at HiscoNFE, and AHA(WA) CEO Bradley Woods.
Mr Woods congratulated chef Michael Hill, and Tall Timbers, saying “the public response to the competition has again been overwhelming; Western Australians are certainly passionate about their steak sandwiches and enjoy being involved in a democratic voting process.
“The steak sandwich brings together everything that is great about WA venues and pubs, from the home-style cooking to the locally-grown produce.”
The five Country WA finalists faced each other at a ‘cook off’ to determine which steak sandwich was the best at the AHA Hospitality Expo on Tuesday 10 May 2016 at Crown Perth. WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Country Competition is sponsored by Tourism Western Australia, HiscoNFE and beverage company Lion.
