Breweries from the eastern-states have put up a mighty fight to their sandgroper counterparts, taking home a large share of the trophies from this year’s Perth Royal Beer Show. The awards gala was held on Friday the 1st of November at the Parmelia Hilton with most of WA’s brewing fraternity in attendance.
The most impressive exhibitor of the event was Redoak Boutique Brewery of New South Wales, who won the trophy for Best Commercial Brewery, while their Weizendoppelbock was judged the Best Commercial Beer of the Show. Meanwhile, Swan Valley’s Feral Brewing Company walked away with the trophy for the Best Western Australian Beer of the Show for their ever-popular Hop Hog, which also took out trophies for Best Ale Packaged and Draught.
Perhaps the biggest surprise for the evening was when Indian Ocean Brewery from Mindarie was presented with the trophy for Best Western Australian Brewery. Indi’s head brewer, Dave Brough, has only been at the brewery since 2012 and the improvement in the beers has been palpable. Other winners from WA included Gage Roads for their 3.5 Pils, Bush Shack Brewery for its Chocolate Beer and Nail Brewing for their Nail Stout. The inaugural Menu Magazine trophy for best packaging was won by Matso’s Broome Brewery, for the fiery label of their Chilli Beer.
The trophy for best amateur brewer was awarded to Brian Fitzgerald, while Menu Mag’s beer writer, Jeremy Sambrooks, won the trophy for best amateur beer of the show.
