Meet The Maker in the Swan Valley

IMG_1378I spent a lovely day at Taylors Art Cafe in the Swan Valley with a group of other food writers and hospitality people for a “Meet The Maker” event hosted by Buy West Eat Best. We enjoyed delicious food and drinks – all made locally – and got to meet and chat to the people who actually produced many of the ingredients.
Caroline Taylor (The Humane Foodist) presented us with a delightful menu including loads of local produce such as fresh figs, goat milk labne, Linley Valley pork with mango salsa, local yabbies on a jerusalem artichoke mash, grass-fed Gingin sirloin (which she cooked in a converted steam engine), and lots of delicious salads. Everything was fresh and beautifully presented.
IMG_1476We also got to try some rather unusual things such as jujubes (which look like miniature apples but are not actually apples at all – we tried them fresh, candied and roasted), as well as prickly pear fruit, and grape and lime ice-cream.
A couple of glasses of verdelho – a wine which the Swan Valley excels in – was the perfect match for a wonderful meal. We are so lucky to have such great produce right on the doorstep of Perth.
