$66.3 Billion Spent in Hospitality – Here’s What It Means

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has just released its latest Retail Trade data and the results are clear:

Australians continue to support local hospitality venues.

For the financial year ending June 2025, Cafés, Restaurants and Takeaway Food Services recorded $66.273 billion in turnover — a 2.5% increase year-on-year.

While the industry continues to face rising costs, workforce shortages, and tightening margins, this increase shows Australians still value the experience and connection of eating out.

“The year-on-year comparison is the most accurate and reliable measure of performance,” says John Hart OAM, National President of Restaurant & Catering Australia.
“It confirms what we’re seeing on the ground — consistent consumer demand and ongoing community support.”

However, Hart warns this growth should not be mistaken for recovery. Many operators are holding back from passing on full cost increases to customers, which means turnover may be up, but profitability is still under strain.

R&CA continues to advocate for industry reforms in key areas:
• Workforce development and training
• Reduction in operating costs and red tape
• Policy that reflects real-world conditions

“This sector is made up of hardworking Australians contributing to jobs, tourism, and the economy,” Hart says. “It needs smart, practical support to stay strong.”
